I began working with Corey Rasmussen in 2009 on a prototype design build for one of our patented products. At that time, Corey was a young engineer, just out of college, working for a product development company. During our first time working together, I began to appreciate his drive and vision to become not only an excellent design engineer, but a young man of excellent character. After our first experience working together, Corey moved on to a large manufacturing company and his engineering and communication skill sets were significantly enhanced. Corey is an "out of the box" thinker. He has an innovative mind and is fearless when it comes to taking on complex mechanical engineering design challenges. His attention to detail is exceptional and he works well with customers. After Corey started his own design Company, our paths crossed again and we are back working with each other on some of my new patented prototype design projects.

Real World Case Study: Machine Design - The Stripper (Fiberglass Stripper/Saw)

Note: Due to ongoing client relationships and NDAs, some information in this case study has been anonymized.

The Project: A manufacturer of power line aerial lift trucks wanted an automated machine to strip the fiberglass off the steel mandrill that is part of the boom, and then cut it to an exact length.

The Challenges: The client wanted this machine to have an approximate cycle time of 20 minutes.  The machine needed to have an incredible pulling force to strip the fiberglass over the long length of 35 feet.  The cutting of the poles then had to be exactly within ⅛ inch tolerances.

The Solution: Rasmussen Designs made the calculations that it would take 95 tons of force to strip the fiberglass over that long of a distance.  The design incorporated hydraulics and PLC controls.  The hydraulic system maximized efficiency by using a torque-limiting pump for maximum flow and pressure.

The Result: This innovative design takes the place of several other machines and saves over 50% of the manufacturing time. Also, it has proven to be highly dependable with low maintenance issues.
