Real World Case Study: Stress Calculations and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) - 150 ft Lift Truck Design

Note: Due to ongoing client relationships and NDAs, some information in this case study has been anonymized. 

The Project: While doing a project for a manufacturer of mobile utility equipment, the 150 ft lift truck needed redesigning due to stressors on the junctions between the booms.

The Challenges:  After the piece of equipment had been built, the stressors were discovered, making it unsafe.

The Solution: Using FEA, we looked at the original design to pinpoint the stresses. We redesigned these areas, applied FEA again, and eliminated the stress points. 

The Result: Due to this redesign, this unit is still being made 20 years later. With FEA the design is tested for stress before it gets built, saving time and money, and ensuring safety.
